Canadian National Classification of Occupations (NOC)
The National Occupational Classification (NOC) is a system for describing the occupations of Canadians. Through this system, statisticians, labor market analysts, career counselors, employers, and job seekers have a standard way to describe and understand a specific job.
The National Occupational Classification organizes approximately 30,000 job titles into 500 occupational groups, 6 skill levels, and 10 major occupational groups. This system was created in line with the cooperation between the Employment and Social Development Agency of Canada and Statistics Canada. The two organizations continue to work together to maintain and update the National Occupational Classification.
What is Canada’s NOC job classification system?
NOC (National Occupational Classification) is a coded mechanism used for the purpose of classifying occupations. In other words, nock is a systematic structure that classifies a wide range of job activities. Also, in addition to classifying jobs, the Nok system also includes information about each job, including job descriptions, required skills, etc.
The Canadian Immigration Service (IRCC) uses this system to analyze labor market information, job forecasting, labor supply and demand analysis, and generally, to manage job-related programs.
Get to know the new version of NOC job classification 2021!
The first edition of the NOC was published in 1992 to classify Canada’s national occupations, and every 10 years thereafter, it has undergone a major structural revision whereby the existing occupational groups are reviewed, along with information gathered from many relevant stakeholders. be. The last version of the Knock system was presented in 2011 and after that, in 2016, the same version was updated and published by the Canadian Immigration Department.
Following the official announcement of the Canadian Immigration Department, since November 16, 2022, the new version of the Knock system (2021) has been used for immigration and work permit applications.
Changes to the new NOC National Occupational Classification System
In the 2021 edition of the NOC classification system, more jobs have been added to the list of in-demand jobs, thus providing more job opportunities to the applicants of these programs. Among the major changes in the Knock 2021 system, the following can be mentioned:
Considering that the focus of the 2021 Nok system is on jobs and not skills, in the design of this Nok, according to the table below, from an innovative classification of six groups called TEER (Training, Education, Experience and Responsibilities) which indicates the degree of training, education , the experience and responsibility required for a job are used instead of the four-level classification of “skill level” in the 2016 edition, which will lead to a more balanced distribution of jobs among “TEER categories”.
“SKILL LEVEL” in KNOCK 2016 “TEER” in KNOCK 2021
Skill level 0 TEER 0
Skill level A TEER 1
Skill level B TEER 2, TEER 3
Skill level C TEER 4
Skill level D TEER 5
The Knock 2021 system takes into account differences in formal education and training requirements and better reflects the development of skills and knowledge that occurs through on-the-job experience.
The KNOCK 2021 system introduces a new 5-digit hierarchical structure compared to the 4-digit hierarchical structure in previous versions of the classification.
Classification structure of the NOC 2021 system of occupations
The KNOC 2021 system is a five-layer hierarchical structure of occupational groups with successive levels separated as follows, consisting of Broad Occupational Category, Major Group, Sub-major Group, Minor Group and The unit group is Unit Group.
- Broad Occupational Category – Broad Occupational Category
- Major Group – Major Group
- Sub-major Group – Sub-major Group
- Minor Group – Minor Group
- Unit Group – Unit Group
It sounds a bit confusing but let us make it clear with an example.
For example, consider the job of civil engineer. This job is known in the new system of Canadian occupation classification or NOC 2021 with NOC code 21300. Now let’s define these 5 layers for this job position:
First layer: broad category = careers in the field of natural sciences = 2
Second layer: main group = professional occupations in applied and natural sciences = 21 (broad classification = 2 and TEER = 1)
The third layer: the main subgroup = professional jobs in the field of engineering = 213
Fourth layer: small group = civil and mechanical engineers = 2130
Fifth layer: unit group = civil engineers = 21300
It should be noted that in the previous KNOCK 2016 system, the main group was a single digit and simply indicated the “broad category”. For example, in the previous system, the civil engineer was known with the knock code 2131, whose main group was 2.
